FOR EXCITEMENT

NEW - Stand Up Paddle Boards are the latest paddling craft to be offered to paddling enthusiasts to give you the best workout. They work most major muscles, especially the leg muscles, as you sway and balance the board. You propel the board with a bent shaft canoe paddle; it is almost like paddling a canoe. As you gain expertise on a paddle board you will even catch waves and go surfing. Check out Stand Up Paddle Boards in our store by spring of 2008. Or, come talk to me about them anytime.
If you need to purchase one sooner call me at 631-727-9895.

FAST - Sea kayaks that really move out. They are great for aerobic workouts and covering as many miles as you can with the least amount of effort and seeing the most scenery and wildlife at the same time. The best kayaks to do this - Nomad or Extreme from Current Designs, Arluk 1.8 from Necky, Epic Endurance 18 or 18' Kevlar Stratus, Norkapp HMC or Seda Viking.

MOST COMFORTABLE KAYAK in the world - TYPHOON from Old Town. It weighs only 42 pounds. The Typhoon has a rear storage container and a deep seat with a high back for comfort. The Typhoon is 11'2" long.
Do you want to test paddle a Typhoon?

WE SPECIALIZE

Jared and Jim are our in-house staff paddlers. Jared paddles (and self-rescues) a Raven along the East End shoreline. He takes his Kea sit-on-top kayak into Peconic Bay and Shinnecock Bay.

Jim has done extensive paddling in Central America, the Bahamas and Down Under (Florida). He has done many local trips on the East End of Long Island most notable a non-stop paddle from Orient Point to Riverhead.

Both guys are experienced Stand Up Paddleboard paddlers. They love to “walk on water”, see marine life from a different perspective and get a great workout.

$50.00 Peconic Paddler Gift Certificate will be given to any paddler who paddles from Orient Point to Riverhead in under 7 ½ hours.
Please keep a log. You are on the honor system.

This sport is for everyone at every age as you can see from the photo below:

Our newest paddler (Jim's grandson Jared)

There are basically three types of kayaks: RECREATIONAL kayaks, SURF/WHITEWATER kayaks and TOURING or Sea Kayaks. Recreational ones are the most popular as they are small, lightweight, inexpensive, stable and easy for anyone (from 3 to 93) to paddle. They come in singles, doubles and some even carry 3. There are sit-ins and sit-on-tops. Some popular models are the SPARKY, SWIFTY, RASCAL, ZYDECO, ACADIA, FRENZY, EXPERIENCE, SPIRIT and the new TYPHOON with storage compartment.

Surf and whitewater kayaking are becoming very popular. Most paddlers like the sit-in type for whitewater and the sit-on-top for surf but many surfers also like to sit inside. If you want some real excitement, head on down to the Atlantic with a LIPSTICK, BIG STICK, FIVE-O or YAK BOARD and slide down an 8 foot monster wave or catch some of the smaller rollers. Oh! What a thrill!!!

If you really want to eat up the miles and get a great workout, a touring kayak is your type of boat. Click on "GO FAST". Touring kayaks can be either sit-on-top or sit-in. They are longer than recreational or surf kayaks, usually measuring 14’ to 18’. Touring kayaks come in singles, doubles and some carry three or 2 adults and a golden retriever. Many have rudders, hatches, bulkheads and deck rigging. They are made of rotomolded polyethylene, fiberglass or lightweight Kevlar.

Most canoes are for multi-purpose use. Longer and narrower means faster and better tracking but you can still fish from them. Shorter and wider (fatter) canoes have better initial stability and are perfect for family use, fishing and bird watching but a bit slow if you want to go any distance.

A TREATISE ON KAYAKS

SOME MODELS THAT HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES, OVER THE YEARS, TO BE VERY MUCH LOVED BY MANY CUSTOMERS.

SOLSTICE GTS – BE STILL MY HEART – I’m addicted. Oh, she glides so smoothly across the bay like on a Teflon carpet. Secondary stability – feels like you are still on shore. The controls (rudder, foot pedals) may have been designed by a Swiss watchmaker. The ergonomics – thigh braces, seat – designed by Mercedes or BMW…And for even more speed, the 18’10" Extreme is like a souped up GTS. Boy, does she fly. This baby will cruise at top speed all day and you won’t even break a sweat.

To watch the birds, catch some blues or stretch out get some zzz’s, ease into a Wilderness Systems PUNGO. 12’2" long and a stable 29" wide, the PUNGO has a padded seat and adjustable foot braces. The cockpit is extra long to accommodate rover, a tackle box or a laptop. A rear storage pouch will hold your lunch, suntan lotion and GPS. There is room behind the seat for 6 – 10lb blues.

A kayak to carry on your shoulder, fit in a Grand Cherokee or store behind the love seat, the SWIFTY and SPARKY from Perception are winners. Weigh only 36 lbs each. That’s less than 3 cases of beer and they last a lot longer. The SWIFTY and SPARKY are almost indestructible. They are very stable and with their oversized cockpits they are easy to enter and exit.

The most comfortable kayak in the world is the SPIRIT from Old Town. It is a sit-on-top, 11’ long and weighs only 35 pounds. The SPIRIT has a deep contoured seat with a high back. Get this, if you turn your body around there is a second spot for your butt, whereby you can lie down on the deck and get a full body tan or just lie back and look at the stars. A new model, the TYPHOON, is like the SPIRIT with a storage compartment.

And if you want to paddle effortlessly you gotta get a WAYFARER paddle made by Epic. This paddle weighs only 21 ounces. This is just 2 oz more than two copies of Canoe/Kayak magazine and it’s a whole lot more fun doing it than reading about it. Epic also makes a Wing racing paddle at 21 oz.

Other great paddles come from Werner. They are made of lightweight fiberglass. I like the SAN JUAN for all day cruising or the IKELOS to really get a workout. This blade is a monster. Many paddlers love the CAMANO with a 6 ½" wide blade, great for cruising in windy conditions. Eddyline make the SEA SWIFT with a graphite shaft at a fiberglass price. The SEA SWIFT is very light and the blades are a beautiful color; some even have picture graphics.
